Members of Management
Invited Guests
Researchers, Ladies and Gentlemen
I would like to start by welcoming you all to the 3rd International
Research conference. This year’s conference focuses on applied
Research and Innovation for Development. Research is a key activity
2
of a university and a crucial national asset. Kabarak University is
committed to promote research among students and faculty as a core
activity of the university. It is only through applied research that we
can remain relevant and contribute towards problem solving and
knowledge creation. Our vision as an institution of higher learning is
‘to become a centre of academic excellence founded on Biblical
Christian values.
The reason we seek to provide education from a Biblical Christian
perspective is based on the fact that without a moral foundation
individuals educated only in their minds are half baked. To be
properly rounded up a person must be trained not only in their minds
3
but also in character as well. This is in accordance with the Biblical
scripture which states and I quote 1 Timothy 4:8 “For physical
training (academic, psychological, etc) is of some value, but
goliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the
present life and the life to come”
However, without research and submission to the light of God’s word,
this vision will only be a mirage in our eyes. As a leading center of
academic excellence, we must be actively involved in continuous
search for knowledge.
4
It is said that ‘research is a formalized curiosity. It is poking and
prying with a purpose’ (Zora Neale Hurston) thus as scholars we
should be active in research as this is the key role to higher education.
Research enables us to identify and conceptualize a problem and with
this, we are able to provide the answers. Research enable us analyze
and discuss issues that affect humanity. We have therefore
continuously invested in the development of research culture,
promotion of innovation and generation of knowledge. That is why,
this year we have set aside a day for undergraduate students to present
their findings as a way of nurturing future researchers. This initiative
promotes innovation and creativity which leads to new products in the
5
market and defines the University as a creator and consumer of
knowledge. Numerous discoveries and innovations have considerably
improved our everyday lives and given us better understanding as a
result of research activities.
Ladies and gentlemen, Potential growth of any economy depends
largely on rigorous research activities geared towards solving national
problems and providing answers to industry. This initiative has
potential to improve the ability of stakeholders such as industries,
communities and the government to understand and tackle issues of
national significance. There is need for researchers to focus on
6
applied research which is problem driven research that addresses
specific human and industrial needs. This approach is critical as
Kenya focuses on the attainment of Vision 2030.
As I conclude my remarks I express special appreciation to His
Excellency the 2nd President of the Republic of Kenya and the
Chancellor of Kabarak University for his commitment and consistent
support to Kabarak University and the Kenyan youth.
May I also take this opportunity to thank all the presenters in this
conference and encourage them that it is not only important to carry
out research but it is necessary to share and disseminate information
7
to provide opportunity for implementation. I wish to recognize the
critical role played by the planning committee and the Institute of Post
Graduate Studies and Research of Kabarak University for the many
hours they invested in planning to make this conference successful. I
also wish to thank the National commission for Science, Technology
and Innovation for consistently supported our research conferences.
Thank you very much and God bless you all.

PROF. JONES KALELI DURING THE DEDICATION AND OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF NAKURU TOWN CAMPUS ON 20TH SEP, 2013
The Chief Guest Hon. Gideon Moi, the Senator Baringo County,
The Presiding Bishop, AIC Kenya, Bishop Dr. Silas Yego,
The Governor Nakuru County, H.E Kinuthia Mbugua,
The Chairman Governing Council, Prof. John Lonyangapuo,
Members of Trustees,
Members of the Governing council,
Members of Management,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ.
I wish to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to this important event of
dedication and official launch of Kabarak University Nakuru Town Campus. This
2
is a remarkable occasion as Kabarak University takes another step to improve the
learning environment for its learners. It is my firm belief that the core business of
a learning institution is to provide students with a rich learning environment that is
open, respectful, caring and safe.
Our new campus provides an ideal learning environment which optimizes
wellbeing of our learners while reflecting a positive university ethos that makes it
an exciting, stimulating and welcoming place. The new facility is well equipped
with offices, Computer labs, library, Cafeteria, student centre and Lecture rooms
for both under graduate and postgraduate students as well. The campus has serene
learning environment with ample space for packing, indoor and outdoor games.
The campus houses the administration offices headed by the Director, his Deputy,
and Assistant Dean of students, Assistant Chaplain, Lecturers offices, finance and
3
other administrators. The location is strategically located, which is walking
distance from Nakuru Central Business District and next to the Eldama Ravine
road.
In order to bring quality education closer to the people, Kabarak University has
expanded its facilities through the acquisition of this new campus which is able to
accommodate more students and programs. This has become necessary because of
increased demand for high education and popularity of Kabarak University
programs. The expansion of this facility coupled with an excellent learning
environment and committed faculty, have propelled the University to reach out to
more students.
Ladies and gentlemen, perhaps the most profound attribute of Kabarak University
is indomitable resilience in developing responsible men and women who are
4
guided by Biblical Christian values. The important lesson here is that our
institutional, moral and Intellectual watersheds must be built upon Biblical
morality and upon Jesus Christ our Lord and savior. This ensures that when the
rebound moment finally comes calling, our graduates are able to stand the test of
time. This we shall do with commitment to the best of our ability. It may be a drop
in the ocean, but with many drops from each one of us we belief it will form
another ocean.
Our dreams will continue to be: to provide holistic quality education based on
research, practical skills and Biblical Christian values. This is captured by the
words of the Greek philosopher (Aristotle) who said “Educating the mind without
educating the heart is no education at all.” and it is for this reason we do what we
do at Kabarak University , “to develop the whole person”.
5
Our graduates have demonstrated outstanding performance in the job market and
in professional forums. This year Kabarak University emerged the Enactus
National champions and they will be representing Kenya in the World Cup
business competition in Cancun Mexico on 26th Sep to 2nd October, 2013.
The University has continued to receive valuable support from the Chancellor the
2
nd President of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency Hon. Daniel T. Arap Moi
whose vision is to provide opportunities to Kenyan youths to acquire quality
education. Through his contribution thousands of young people have been
mentored. Indeed over the years His Excellence has made permanent footprints in
their lives that shall never be erased. He has given them that which cannot be
taken away.
6
I urge the residents of Nakuru County and especially the working class to take
advantage of this magnificent facility to pursue their academic dreams.
Thank you very much
2013-01-01T00:00:00ZSPEECH BY THE KABARAK UNIVERSITY VICE CHANCELLOR, REV. PROF. JONES KALELI DURING THE DURING THE SECOND KABARAK UNIVERSITY AND KAMAE CONFERENCE AND FESTIVAL ON OCTOBER, 2013http://ir.kabarak.ac.ke/handle/123456789/9362024-03-23T05:51:13Z2013-01-01T00:00:00ZSPEECH BY THE KABARAK UNIVERSITY VICE CHANCELLOR, REV. PROF. JONES KALELI DURING THE DURING THE SECOND KABARAK UNIVERSITY AND KAMAE CONFERENCE AND FESTIVAL ON OCTOBER, 2013
Good morning
First I welcome you to Kabarak University for this week’s music
conference feel at home in our midst.
Kabarak University has a reach history of music. This institution was
founded by H. E Daniel Arap Moi, the Second President of the Republic
of Kenya who indeed has a lot of interest in music. It may interest you to
know that every day, a lot of music is performed in the Kabarak
institutions. The Kabarak chapel has hosted many musicians and
concerts. Such musicians and choirs include Kenyans, Tanzanians,
Ugandans, Europeans and Americans.
The first music conference was held here in the year 2010. I am happy to
report that during that time three main books were launched by H.E
Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. I am also informed that research and
publication of these books were sponsored wholly by the Second
president. At the same time a host of music scholars and researchers in
various areas of church music were also involved.
This conference aims at discussing research findings in various areas of
church music and music education. These findings have a lot of policy
implications in the area of curriculum development in Kenya and Africa
at large. It is important to note that the current constitutional
dispensation guarantees freedom of worship while at the same time
makes demand that Kenyan children must access free education. This
implies that this conference papers can be used by the government to
improve educational practices and music performance throughout the
country.
Kabarak University is in the process of starting a school of music that
shall teach and conduct research in various areas of musicology, music
education and performance. It is because of this that I would like to
welcome you all to Kabarak University and in a way urge you to
participate and assist us to establish a school of music founded on
biblical Christian Values.
Music education and performance has been delivered in Kenya before
and after independence. This shows the significance attached by
government and private citizens to music. Elsewhere it has been found
out that those who play piano and sing often tend to have superior
cognitive skills related scientific and mathematical tasks. Music is used
for therapeutical purposes in hospitals. Performance of music is also a
worthwhile economic activity which many artists have used to earn a
living. Music is used as a means of cultural adaptation and transmission.
Music is used in spreading the word of God the world over besides being
a means of creating national cohesion and patriotism.
Music industry is currently a major foreign exchange earner in our
country. For all these reasons, it is regrettable that music has been
removed from among subjects being examined at the primary school
level.
I would like to urge you scholars to partner with Kabarak University and
mount revival campaign for music performance and reconsideration of
education policies which are friendly to music.
In conclusion, I would like to urge music organizations like UNESCO to
increase their funding of music education and related activities. The
government must also support research in music and provision of
scholarships to music students. Kabarak University and KAMAE would
like to impress upon the world that music education and performance
should be prioritized in national budget so that talent development can
be achieved in Kenya.
So ladies and gentlemen, mine is to wish you God’s blessing as you go
through the conference. May ideas about musicology be generated for
the blessing of all people and the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
Thank you and blessings to you all.

3
I now charge, as you leave this University with the words
of Joshua 1:7-8 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful
to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn
from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful

resilience you have shown in your academic pursue. You
have clearly shown that you are unique lawyers in the
making. The management is committed to give you every
support you require to excel in your career.

your role models and have done all they could to prepare,
6
nurture and train you to come out as top lawyers in Kenya
and in the international job market. I wish also to thank
our guest speaker who has found time out of his busy
schedule to come and grace this occasion. All guests who
have come to join us, thank you very much and God bless
you.

The 2nd President of the Republic of Kenya,
His Excellency Hon. Daniel T. Arap Moi,
Members of Management
Participants,
Invited Guests
Ladies and Gentlemen
Good morning.
On behalf of the Governing Council I wish to welcome all
participants to this important annual event. Research is an
integral part of university activity and the primary
purpose of research is to produce knowledge that can be
applied within and outside academic setting. Research
also forms the foundation of program development and
policies everywhere around the universe. It also solves
particular existing problems of concern. The theme of this
year’s research points us to the direction that we need to
focus our energy as people that the country is counting on
to come up with new innovation . There is need to focus
3
more on innovation to address challenges facing our
country and continent.
Innovation is the application of better solutions that meet
new requirements or existing market needs. Given the
noticeable effects on efficiency, quality of life and
productive growth, innovation is a key factor in society
and economy. Consequently, policymakers must develop
environments that will foster innovation.
4
Yet, an innovation and commercialization gap persists
between new knowledge arising from Kenya’s research
efforts and the needs of the market. Universities are both
important sources of research because the innovation and
commercialization gap in Kenya is so large. Investments in
University applied research and innovation are an
important component of a national strategy to achieve
Kenya’s innovation target of becoming an industrialized
nation by 2030. I therefore call upon all the participants to
5
think outside the box, for creativity and innovation
requires people to think out of the normal.
I wish you fruitful research presentation. Thank you and
God bless you all.

JOHN LONYANGAPUO DURING THE DEDICATION AND OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF NAKURU TOWN CAMPUS ON 20TH SEP, 2013http://ir.kabarak.ac.ke/handle/123456789/9332024-03-23T05:04:10Z2013-09-01T00:00:00ZSPEECH BY THE KABARAK UNIVERSITY GOVERNING COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, PROF. JOHN LONYANGAPUO DURING THE DEDICATION AND OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF NAKURU TOWN CAMPUS ON 20TH SEP, 2013
On behalf of the Governing Council, may I take this opportunity to
congratulate the Chancellor and Board of Trustees for acquiring the
property where the new campus stands. The new campus being
launched today is a landmark towards the achievement of the
University vision and mission.
The new Milimani Town campus offers adequate space for learning,
research, worship and recreation. This facility will go a long way in
making Kabarak University a centre of excellence. The campus is
located in the heart of the fastest growing town in East and Central
Africa. The new campus with the state-of-the-art facilities will enable
more Kenyans acquire high-skills needed for national and global job
market .Kabarak University will continue to produce citizens equipped
with skills, knowledge, expertise and values required for a robust
economy as envisioned in Vision 2030.
Ladies and gentlemen, the governing council will continue to support
the development of new programs and facilities in this campus. It is
encouraging to note that the campus is experiencing massive growth in
student enrolment and facilities. With this facility in town, the working
class can comfortably upgrade their professional skills by enrolling in
various programs conducted in the evenings and weekends. The private
and public sectors will benefit from this campus significantly. We
further encourage the Nakuru County government to partner with us to

Biblical Christian values. Our focus is the development of the whole
person-the mind, the spirit and the body.
May God bless you all

The leadership of Kenya Association of Musical Arts
Education
Participants in the Kabarak University Music Festival
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good afternoon
Throughout my life, I have always loved Christian music
from early child hood. I began engaging in music
activities, teaching Sunday school and later my fellow
adult colleagues. I have also participated in music
2
festival including the famous KIMA music festival in
western Kenya.
As you are aware, God our creator loves music just like
the Bible says, music will continue in heaven when all
other things cease in this world.
I urge mankind to learn to praise God through music.
The Bible records that angels praise and worship God in
music.
3
When Christ was born the angels sang praises to the son
of God. It is therefore our duty to praise God always. To
do that, proper identification and exploitation of talent
must take place. This should be followed by adequate
training of people in voice and instruments. History of
music indicates that humans have used various
instruments and voice to to make music. However it is
regrettable that in some occasions people take music
performance simply as a pass time activity. When that
happens, the result is poor performance of music. Those
4
who do serious singing have made great impact on the
life of others.
Just like the early Christians did, sacred music have been
used to preach the word of God. I urge Kenyans to take
music seriously. Those involved in playing different
instruments and singing should dedicate there
productive time on this noble cause. This will result in
increasing a culture of performance in Africa. It will help
us to conserve our culture, while at the same time
5
enable us to borrow useful practices from the western
world, which furthers our interest in music performance.
Kenyans should not abandon their culture in favor of
western culture. Our music is rich, our melodies are very
good. I am happy to note that there is a move to create
a theory of African music school upon which musical
composition and arrangement shall be established. Both
South Africa and West African music scholars have made
great strides in this research. This too needs to be
emulated by East Africa which is the cradle of mankind. I
6
am happy to note that several Kenyans are holding
leading positions in major music bodies like the
international society of music education.
As the patron of Kenya association of musical arts
education, I would like to urge the government to invest
more resources in music education and research. Talents
must be exploited during the early years of a child’s
development.
7
I would like to further urge the government to
reconsider her policy of excluding music from the block
of examinable subjects. This is because many teachers
do not concentrate on non-examinable subjects at the
KCPE level. Because of that many students tend not to
choose music at the secondary school level. This
situation further affects choice of music related careers
at the university level.
I am informed that gains made in music development in
past years have been lost due to curriculum changes
8
which do not favor music. Revision of curriculum should
consider the central place occupied by music in our
education, political, social, cultural and economical lives
of Kenyans.
The participants who have attended the first music
conference here at Kabarak University have made Kenya
proud. The associates have produced standard journal of
music and will produce the second journal in the next
few months. I urge Kenyans to join Kenya association of
musical arts education so that we can together educate
9
Kenyans and enhance standards of musical performance
in the country.
This being an annual event, it is important that we
continue with the culture of performance and music
education activities and not wait until next year.
I take this opportunity to thank all music scholars,
researchers, and choir directors and all singers for
coming to Kabarak to participate in this activity. Kabarak
10
University is considering to establish a school of music
studies in the near future.
Therefore with these remarks, ladies and gentlemen I
declare the second Conference for Kenya Association of
Musical Art Education and Festival Officially open.
Thank you and God bless you
2013-01-01T00:00:00ZREMARKS OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE CHANCELLOR OF KABARAK UNIVERSITY AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 3RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND MOOT COURT COMPETITION ON CHILDREN’S RIGHTS AT KABARAK UNIVERSITYhttp://ir.kabarak.ac.ke/handle/123456789/9312024-03-23T05:40:39Z2013-01-01T00:00:00ZREMARKS OF HIS EXCELLENCY THE CHANCELLOR OF KABARAK UNIVERSITY AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 3RD ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND MOOT COURT COMPETITION ON CHILDREN’S RIGHTS AT KABARAK UNIVERSITY
I welcome you all to Kabarak University.
At Kabarak University, we believe and invest in quality
education. A forum of this nature goes a long way in
enhancing the quality of education of our students. I am
pleased to know that students from the East African region
have come together to share their knowledge and
experiences as well as to benefit from the guidance of
professionals and experts in the law profession.
2
I also understand that within the framework of this forum,
students from the various universities in the East African
region will compete on a hypothetical case on various
aspects of the rights of children. It is this kind of
competition that I describe as healthy. In a competition of
this nature, there are no losers. You are all winners. This
is because all of you will acquire a lot of knowledge from
your peers and instructors.
The East African Community which I played an
instrumental role in formulating envisioned this kind of
3
interaction among its citizens. As students, you have a
critical role to play in making the dream of the East
African Community a reality. Involvement in interactions
of this nature will go a long way in making the dream of a
fully integrated East Africa a reality.
I do appreciate the involvement of Kabarak University,
other law schools in East Africa, and Save the Children
International in enhancing the stature and sustainability
of this program which upholds the children’s rights.
4
5
I have found the theme of this year’s event “Eliminating
Harmful Social and Cultural Practices Affecting
Children: Our Collective Responsibility” to be
particularly interesting. African Children continue to face
serious challenges some of which threaten their very
survival. As members of the academic community, you
have a duty to provide solutions to these challenges. At
Kabarak we are keen to host you, not just this year but for
years to come to give you an opportunity to supply long
lasting and practical solutions to the challenges that
confront the African child in particular.
In terms of vision, since this event is meant to coincide
with the annual theme of the day of the African Child, I
envisage a future where this event will bring together
students not just from the East African region but from
the entire continent of African. I am sure there is a lot
more that you will learn by bringing on board students
from other regions on the African continent as a whole. If
there is anything we can do as Kabarak University to make
this vision a reality, kindly bring it to our attention.
6
I wish to appreciate the contribution of Save the Children
International – Kenya for providing the critical financing
that has facilitated this event. I wish to encourage them to
continue with this and other initiatives.
I wish you a wonderful stay at Kabarak University. Feel
free to enjoy our serene learning environment. I know the
staff and students of Kabarak University will extend our
warm hospitality to all of you to make your brief stay
positively memorable.
7
Ladies and gentlemen, with those few remarks, I declare
the Third Annual Conference and Moot Court Competition
at Kabarak University officially opened.
